The Nelson Monument is an iconic landmark located in Princes Street Gardens in the heart of Edinburgh. It is a 60-foot tall tribute to Admiral Lord Nelson, whose victory at the Battle of Trafalgar formed a major part of British history. Built in 1807, it is the world’s first monument to Nelson and for two centuries it has acted as a beacon for locals and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can climb up to the top via a tight spiral staircase, where spectacular views of the castle and the city can be enjoyed. The Monument also contains a 'time ball' which is released at 1pm each day to commemorate the hour of Trafalgar.
