Justice Palace

The Palais de Justice in Lyon is an architectural marvel and its neoclassical façade is an impressive sight for photographers. The building was designed by the Austrian architect Johann-Franz Dussault and built between 1780 and 1788, and is crowned by a magnificent 33-metre dome. The courthouse is located in Cours Franklin Roosevelt, one of the largest public squares in the historic area of Vieux-Lyon. It stands opposite the ancient Théâtre des Celestins, making it a fitting pairing of dramatic architecture. The exterior is decorated with statues representing Justice, Prudence and other virtues. Climb the wide steps of the main entrance to admire the details of friezes and decorations. Inside, the Palais de Justice houses the Cour of Appeal, the Lyon court of first instance and the Supreme Court. With its impressive colonnades, high domes, large staircases and brightly painted hallways, the Palais de Justice is a must-see in Lyon.
