With an area of three hectares, the Plaza was designed in the late 19th century by French-Argentine architect Charles Thays, and houses the monument to General San Martín, who liberated much of South America from Spanish rule. The most remarkable attractions of the Plaza include a 12-meter-high Corinthian column and a statue of San Martín on horseback. Also, visitors will find the old Retiro train station, the Conservatorio de Música, a southern entrance area with an amphitheater, and an underground parking lot. The Plaza is the main hub of important streets such as Avenida del Libertador, Avenida 9 de Julio, and Avenida Córdoba.
