Monte Forato

Monte Forato is a majestic limestone mountain in the heart of Garfagnana, Tuscany, Italy. It is a popular spot for hiking and can be reached by a short but steep walk from the medieval village of Stazzema. The name "forato" means "perforated" and refers to the sheer holes and arches eroded in the vertical walls at the peak. The peak provides steep but rewarding 360° panoramic views of the surrounding hills, forest and the nearby towns of Bagni di Lucca and Barga. The hike up to Monte Forato usually takes around 1-2 hours, depending on the skill level of the hiker. There are several vantage points along the route of the hike which offer stunning views, so it is definitely worth breaking up the journey. Along the way, visitors should keep an eye out for the many different colorful wildflowers and birds which inhabit the area.
