The construction of the cathedral began in the first half of the 12th century and continued over the course of several centuries, with many modifications taking place in the succeeding years. As such, it features a variety of styles from Gothic to Renaissance, including three transepts, four bell towers, an impressive octagonal lantern tower, and a congregation of chapels. Built from sandstone, the cathedral is especially renowned for its stained glass windows and doorways, some of which feature biblical themes or scenes, while others depict God’s creation and the Last Judgment. Its many stone sculptures, paintings, and even frescoes have all been carefully preserved and are highly valued today.
