Mt Pinatubo

Mt. Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano located in Zambales, Philippines. It rises 1,486 meters above sea level, making it the second highest volcano in the Philippines. The volcano is renowned for its eruption in June 1991, which was the second-largest terrestrial eruption of the 20th century.

Today, Mt. Pinatubo is a major tourist destination with spectacular views, intense hikes, fields of striking lahar and crater lakes. Tourists can explore the crater rim and nearby creek bed, or visit the many hot springs across the valley. In terms of vegetation, visitors can explore the surreal landscape of desert plants and trees that have started to re-colonize the slopes over the past two decades. For adventure seekers, the close-by rivers offer opportunities for fishing, swimming and spelunking. To get to Mt. Pinatubo, you can take a bus from any major city in the area, or a 4x4 jeepney-style transport from Botolan. Tours are available with experienced guides. While the area is relatively safe during the day, be sure to be back to your accommodation before nightfall.
