Municipal Corporation

Mumbai's Municipal Corporation, commonly known as Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC, is the governing body for the Indian city of Mumbai. It is responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the city and its suburbs. BMC is the richest municipal organization in India, with an annual budget of more than Rs 37,052 crores. BMC was established in 1888 under the Bombay Municipal Corporation Act of 1888 and is responsible for the infrastructure development, water supply, sanitization, garbage disposal, transport and traffic management as well as health and education of the people living in Mumbai. BMC also presides over maintenance of some of the city's historical buildings and monuments. Mumbai's municipal corporation is located at the BMC headquarters at the historic BMC building, at Fort, South Mumbai.
