Dedicated to John the Baptist, it served as the main bishopric of Ravenna in the 6th century, before being replaced by the baptistery of San Giovanni Evangelista. It is circular in shape, with an inner diameter of 8.5 meters, and an outer wall of 13 meters. Inside, you will find eight monolithic granite columns, between which are the bronze panels representing the four Evangelists, plastered in clusters. The beautiful exterior is adorned with splendid 8th century mosaics, most notably a mosaic of the Madonna and Child in the Chancel. The Battistero Neoniano is also home to various precious gems, and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As an iconic reminder of the city's Byzantine past, it makes for a mesmerizing sight for any history and architecture enthusiast.
