On the top of the arch, there is a 19th century clock, a mermaid with a trident and an impressive coat of arms. There are pleasant cafes, shops and terraces that line the historical alleyways of this prime spot. The dazzling squares and gardens of Rossio, Restauradores and Duque de Saldanha also form part of the district, as well as the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos opera house.
