The Dead Sea is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. It is the lowest elevation and the deepest hyper-saline lake in the world. Its surface and coastal areas are 1,400 feet below sea level and the deepest portion is about 1,659 feet deep. Its salinity is a staggering 33.7%, making it 8.6 times saltier than the ocean! The majority of the area around the lake is barren desert, but there are a few small villages that remain.
