Erected in honor of Cuba's national freedom fighter and poet, Jose Martí, this monument stands tall on a stone plinth, atop which sits a bronze statue of Jose Martí, who is seen holding a book in one hand and a quill in the other. As a symbol of resistance to Spanish rule, the monument celebrates a great man, who fought for justice in Cuba and abroad and his ideals for peace and freedom continue to inspire people. The bronze statue was constructed in 1940 and unveiled in 1952. The statue is surrounded by four pillars with reliefs which drawn from Jose Martí's speeches, plays, and poems. These reliefs were carved by the Mexican sculptor, Antonio Castellanos.
