Cape Spear Lighthouse

The iconic Cape Spear Lighthouse stands proudly at the most easterly point of North America, in the town of St John’s, Canada. Built in 1836 by the British to protect ships from the treacherous rocks along the coast, the lighthouse was originally powered by gas lamps. Over its extensive history, the lighthouse’s difficulty in reaching has been a challenge, as the original access to it was only by boat or dangerous climb. Nowadays, it can be reached from the town by a short 20-minute drive.
