Built under the reign of Pope Julius II in the early 16th Century, the Basilica di San Pietro Columns in Vatican City is one of the most iconic and recognizable sights in the city. The Columns are located just outside the walls of the golden cupola of the Basilica and are among the most visited spots in the city.

The Columns were constructed by two renowned Italian architects, Domenico Fontana and Giacomo della Porta. The Columns are made from Apennine Marble, and consist of three layers, the largest of which stands at a staggering 8.5m high! Each Column is carved with intricate designs, featuring symbols and figures of Christian tradition. The Columns reflect the impressive artistic ambitions of the Papal State of the time, and have become a lasting symbol of its power and influence. Today, the Columns attract an impressive number of visitors who come to take in the beauty of their design and to imagine what life was like during the 16th Century in the Papal State.
