It is well known for its ancient abbeys dating back to the sixth century. The most famous of these are the Rocca Abbaziale and the Subiaco Abbey. The Rocca Abbaziale was constructed for the Benedictine monks, and stands about two kilometres from Subiaco. It is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, with an impressive façade, large arched windows, and an inner cloister. The Subiaco Abbey is an equally impressive building, with its crypt, bell tower and frescoes. It is a great place to explore and admire the magnificent mural frescoes and paintings. Both abbeys offer breathtaking views of the countryside of the region. Visitors should note that the abbeys are closed to the public on the weekends.
