Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud

The Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud, in Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, France is a stunning complex of monastic buildings and church structures dating back to the 12th century. Situated in the Loire Valley, it was once one of the largest monastic sites in Europe. The abbey was home to the ruling Plantagenet Dynasty from 1154 to 1204 and includes the burial sites of Richard I, King John and Isabella, Princess of England. The abbey today is a great example of early Gothic architecture and today it still functions as a monastery, housing a small group of nuns who staff the attached Hotel and Restaurant de L'Abbaye.
