Igreja de São Domingos

Igreja de São Domingos, in Amarante, is the perfect blend of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles; it's certainly amongst one of the most impressive churches in Portugal. This beautiful building was built over a long period, the foundations having been executed in the 18th century. The two towers, dating from the late 19th century, are 75 meters tall, visible from the main square. The interior of the church is awe-inspiring with its neoclassical altar and the marble cladding, adorning the walls. The roof is equally impressive, with a painted ceiling by renowned Brazilian painter Alvares de Azevedo. Don’t miss the elaborately decorated caps and the pulpit. The church is an important cultural and religious center which still hosts regular masses, concerts and organ rehearsals, that you can attend.
