Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United Kingdom. Located near the village of Dornie in the west Highlands of Scotland, the castle is perched on a tiny, rocky island at the mouth of three lochs. Built in the 13th century, Eilean Donan was strategically placed to protect the area against invasions by the Vikings and, later, by the English. Today, the castle remains intact and visitors can explore its three stories, chapel, courtyard and battlements. The surrounding landscape is equally stunning, making this a popular spot for photographers. While crossing the footbridge to the castle, visitors can take in breathtaking views of the lochs, glen and, on clear days, the Isle of Skye.
