Perched on a rocky crag at the meeting of the Eresma and Clamores rivers, the Alcázar de Segovia is a striking medieval fortress that reads like a fairytale castle. Its tapering slate roofs, cylindrical towers and ship‑like silhouette make it one of Spain’s most photographed monuments and a tangible symbol of Castilian power. The Alcázar functioned as a royal palace, state prison and later as the royal artillery academy; it now houses historic rooms, armory collections and period furniture.
Its origins trace to a Roman fortification, with major transformations under Muslim and Christian rulers from the 12th to the 15th centuries; notably Isabella I was proclaimed queen of Castile here in 1474, a political turning point that shaped Spanish history. Architecturally the complex blends Romanesque and Gothic fabrics with Mudejar and later Renaissance modifications; the Torreón (keep) and its steep conical roofs are especially characteristic. Interior highlights include richly decorated chambers, the Hall of the Kings and an extensive arms and tapestry collection. Unique curiosities: the castle’s silhouette is often cited as an inspiration for Walt Disney’s Cinderella castle, and the site’s former role as the Royal Artillery School explains its unusually dense armory exhibits for a palace.
