It is an Anglican Benedictine monk's house of worship, now a ruin with some standing walls. The abbey was founded by the monks of Bury St Edmunds Abbey during the reign of Henry II in 1171 and the last prior, John Waleys, was found guilty of treason and executed in 1538. The remains of the abbey today feature the walls of the church, cloister, chapter house and other buildings in the convent garden. There are also two gatehouses and an extensive array of fishponds. It is believed to have once held the largest brewery in Suffolk.
