The Wallfahrtskirche Käppele and Marienberg Fortress are two of Würzburg's most iconic landmarks. The former is a pilgrimage church located atop the hill of Käppele and has been in operation since the mid-19th century. The fortress is one of Germany's oldest, originally built in 855 and expanded by Emperor Barbarossa in 1155. Today, the fortress is still home to a restaurant, outdoor theatre and some historical exhibits. From the terrace in front of the wallfahrtskirche, visitors can enjoy stunning views of Würzburg city and the Main river. Marienberg Fortress, located to the south, is also home to a restaurant and some attractions, including a guided tour of the castle and a 300 year old labyrinth. The grounds of the fortress are a popular site for hiking as they provide stunning views of the city and river.
