Kilmainham Gaol is a former prison located in Kilmainham, Ireland. It is now a museum, open to the public. It provides an insight into the harsh living conditions of prisoners between 1796-1924. It was the scene of many notable executions, including those of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. The Gaol is a popular tourist destination and provides a fascinating look into Irish history. Visitors can learn about the harsh conditions of their incarceration and admire the architecture of the prison. When at Kilmainham Gaol, be sure to also visit the adjacent Old Museum building which houses exhibitions about the many prisoners and their stories.
