The Calgary Wooden Library is a unique and fascinating piece of architecture located in the Alberta city of Calgary. Built entirely of wood, the seemingly fragile structure is able to hold over 300,000 books, although it's not a functioning library. Visitors can explore the two floors and enjoy close up views of the intricate joinery and metalwork of the library shelves. The incredible details turn the library into a must-see tourist attraction. The library was designed by the renowned Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal and completed in 1989. It provides a nice respite from the city setting, as its interior has the look and feel of a forest glade. Its roof is made of wood shingles, while the shelves are a combination of wood and steel. The sheer amount of wood used in its construction surprised many, yet the building is still standing and has become a symbol of Calgary’s commitment to recycling.
