Spanning the Brazos River, it was built in the Art Deco style in 1933-34. It is constructed of steel trusses with a total length of 1,310 feet, with a main span of 565 feet. 52 painted steel beams of varying colors grace the trusses, forming an arcade along the sides. The bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and its garden-like setting along the river provides a pleasant view for pedestrians. The river banks are a popular spot for picnics and fishing. An observation deck near the middle of the bridge provides panoramic views of the city. Biking and walking paths traverse the bridge, linking Waco’s businesses and neighborhoods to the river. The bridge is well illuminated for nighttime photography. The colors, textures and historic nature of the bridge also make it a popular subject during the day.
