Riserva dei Calanchi di Montalbano Jonico

Riserva dei Calanchi di Montalbano Jonico is a protected archaeological and natural area located in the town of Montalbano Jonico (Basilicata region) in Southern Italy. This geological phenomenon, called "calanchi", was created by the erosion of the Apennines mountain range and is made of deep gullies, called 'gravine' or 'ciglioni', formed by wind and rainfall which, together with landslides and sinkholes, have formed a unique landscape. The area covers around 42 ha and is largely unexplored. Visitors can observe the calanchi and their deep furrows, suitable for a unique type of photography and nature enthusiasts. There is also a visitor centre with scientific and educational activities, an auditorium and a cafeteria.
