Doel

Doel is a Belgian village in the municipality of Beveren, in the province of East Flanders. It is located on the left bank of the River Scheldt, south of the city of Antwerp. It has been almost completely submerged by the river, resulting in it becoming something of an isolated pocket on the riverbank. Doel is known for its 17th century historical windmill, its picturesque landscape, and its unique and complicated relationship with the nearby port of Antwerp. Doel is also known for its numerous abandoned buildings and its vibrant street art scene. The village is a popular destination for photographers, who come to see the village in all its abandoned glory and street art. Despite its desolate atmosphere, Doel is still home to some 43 people, who remain defended by the local council against the claims of the Port of Antwerp. Doel is accessible by car and there is also a regular bus service connecting it to the city of Antwerp.
