The Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore is the largest Roman Catholic Marian church in Rome, often known as 'Santa Maria Maggiore'. It is one of the four papal major basilicas – the highest ranking of the minor basilicas. Built in the 5th century, it is renowned for its splendid Cosmatesque flooring, intricate mosaics, and historical tombs.
