Sé Velha in Coimbra is a beautiful ancient Romanesque cathedral, founded in 1184 and completed in 1210. Its solid stone facade sits atop a cliff overlooking the Mondego River. Inside the church is ornately designed with Gothic pointed arches and slender columns. The most fascinating features of this church are its tombs, altars, and works of art, including stained glass, carvings and polychrome walls. Take time to wander up the 12th century steps to the Machado de Castro Museum, located in the catacombs and crypt of the Sé Velha.
