📍 Iz Independence Square, Uruguay
Salvo Palace is an impressive and iconic palace in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay's capital. It is an integral part of the Ciudad Vieja (Old City) which is a centrepiece of the city. It has an old-fashioned elegance and charm, making it a popular tourist spot for tourists. The palace was commissioned in 1913 by the president of Uruguay at the time—Bartolomé Mitre—to serve as the country’s presidential residence. It was previously a fort, Barracks and defensive tower, but was given a French-style transformation in the early 20th century by French architect, Jacques Hermite. Today the Palace is home to the Uruguayan government offices and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its rooms are used for state tourism, business, cultural and diplomatic acts and the grounds are open for public visits. It is open to the public year-round and visitors can explore the courtyards and gardens, as well as getting an up close and personal look at its impressive architecture. Notable features include its grand iron staircase, its furniture, painting galleries and its grand reception area. The Salvo Palace is an impressive sight and is a must-see during any time of your stay in Montevideo.
