Saint Roch's Chapel

Saint Roch's Chapel in New Orleans is a historic Roman Catholic shrine, located at 1309 St. Roch Avenue. It is believed to have been founded in the early 19th century and is the oldest known surviving shrine dedicated to Saint Roch in all of the United States. The chapel, which is partitioned into two distinct parts, was built with local cypress and is considered a fine example of vernacular Louisiana architecture. A unique feature of the chapel's interior is its mural which is painted and heavily decorated with flowers and other symbols. The site is owned and managed by Preservation Hall and is open to the public daily. Visitors should note there is no public transportation access to the chapel, so either a car or a taxi will be needed to reach it.
