It is mostly known as the site of the Battle of Taw Bridge, which was fought in 1643 during the English Civil War. There is a small memorial to the battle at the edge of the hamlet. The hamlet is also known for its distinctive geography. It is situated on the edge of the valley, with a stunning view of the river, farmlands, and rolling hills giving it an incredible backdrop. Pontoon is also known for its agricultural history, having one of the earliest recorded windmills in the United Kingdom which today still stands as a symbol of the area’s traditional roots. There is a small public footpath that leads to the windmill, the site of the battle, and the river. Pontoon is also home to an old dairy farm, a small car park, and a children’s playground.
