Place de la Bastille

Place de la Bastille is one of the most iconic places in Paris. It is located in the 11th arrondissement and is easily accessible. This square, a focal point of both modern and ancient history, serves as a reminder of the French Revolution and the end of the monarchy. It features the Colonne de Juillet, which was erected in 1833 to commemorate the Three Glorious Days revolution of 1830. The symbol of the Bastille, a former prison, is commemorated here with the enormous structure. Most of the square is taken up by traffic and the rest is covered by gardens and surrounded by cafes, restaurants and shops. The open-air opera, Opéra Bastille, can also be found here and offers performances all year round. Skip the lines to take a tour inside, or just enjoy watching the square come alive during summer nights, when special events are often organised here.
