Koya-san is a sacred complex of temple and mausoleum grounds found at the top of Mt. Koya, in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. It is said to be the birthplace of the founding monk of the influential Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. The site is known for its spiritual atmosphere, with over 120 temples and shrine complexes scattered throughout the small mountain village. These include Danjo-ji Temple, famous for its "bodhisattva aisle" adorned with carvings of 1000 Kannon statues, as well as Kongobu-ji, the complex's administrative temple and the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon sect. Visitors can also be enthralled by the incredible beauty of mountains, forests, and waterfalls. Aside from the spiritual sites, Koya-san also features a number of lodging options like temples offering traditional Buddhist vegetarian meals (shojin ryori) and unique accommodations. Koya-san is a great place for visitors to discover the beauty of Japan’s traditional culture and landscapes.
