Hohenschwangau Castle is a 19th-century palace situated in the small German town of Schwangau, close to the city of Füssen in Bavaria. It was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who is sometimes referred to as the 'Fairytale King'. The castle is accessible via bus from Füssen. The building stands at the foot of two mountains and is surrounded by several picturesque lakes. The palace consists of an upper and lower castle, both of which were restored in the 19th century in a Gothic Revival style. Inside, visitors can expect to find a range of luxurious palace furnishings, exquisite tapestries, golden walls and large stained glass windows.

The castle also has a beautiful well-maintained garden which is well worth exploring. From the upper castle visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Alpine region. Visitors can also take part in guided tours of the castle, and learn about the life and times of the ‘Fairytale King’. It is a fabulous destination for travellers and photographers alike, and offers a unique insight into Bavarian history.
