The Rob Roy Glacier Trail is one of the most popular day hikes in New Zealand. You will get spectacular views over the Matukituki Valley and get close to the Rob Roy Glacier, a glacier located in Mount Aspiring National Park.
Starting at Raspberry Creek carpark, the first 3 km of the trail will take you up the river valley to the Philistine Lake. Once there, the track takes a more strenuous turn as it crosses rugged mountain terrain before you reach the viewpoint of Rob Roy Glacier, which is located at an altitude of almost 2000 metres. You'll need about 3-4 hours for the one way journey, and it is recommended to allow for more time for you to enjoy the sights and take some short breaks. The small waterfall and colorful lake near the carpark are also worth a stop before or after the trail, if you have the time. As always when travelling in the mountains, take extra caution and bring the necessary equipment as weather can change quickly. You're also advised to check with the local guides in the area.
