Outer Drive Bridge over the Chicago River

The Columbus Bridge in Chicago is the oldest double-decker bridge in the city, crossing the Chicago River near Lake Michigan. It was designed by engineers Geary and Barloga in 1929 and spans 642 feet (196 m) across the river. It is composed of two low-level bascule trusses and has ten lanes of traffic. Its characteristic two bascules, or hydraulic lifts, allows boat traffic to pass through the bridge. During the day, its lights are turned off; at night, the bridge is illuminated. The bridge creates an incredible reflection in the river and makes a breathtaking view for city visitors. It has become a popular photo spot for visitors and photographers alike.
