The Cathedral of Santa María La Real de La Almudena (Almudena Cathedral) is a relatively new church in Madrid, completely funded by the Spanish government. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Madrid and the symbol of Madrid’s religious faith. The neo-gothic basilica was started in 1879 and finally consecrated in 1993 by Pope John Paul II – making it the first ecclesiastical structure built in Spain after the Catholic Church was restored in 1875. The exterior façade is both majestic and intimidating, with a large clock-tower, high and pointed arches, and two small spires at the top. The interior is a mix of Byzantine, Baroque and Renaissance styles. It is known for its intricately painted and ornate ceilings, altars, statues, paintings and stained glass windows. Visitors get to marvel at masterpieces by Goya and Zurbarán, and the bust of Pope John Paul II. The Almudena is a must-visit site in Madrid, offering beauty and serenity, with daily mass and organ music concerts every Sunday. Make sure to bring a camera to capture the grandeur of this incredible church.
