Wouda pumping station

The Wouda pumping station in Lemmer, Netherlands is a unique structure that you can’t miss. Built between 1924 and 1933, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, recognising its status as the largest and most advanced 200-meter pumping station in the world. The building is over 150 metres long, and its exterior is made mainly of steel, iron, concrete and stone. Inside, 16 pumps are set in a row in the underground engineering hall, a spectacle you can explore through guided tours. This pumping station was designed for the J.D. Wouda and powered by its own electricity plant, so visitors can explore the entire system. The facility is still operational, ensuring good water supply and level in the Ijsselmeer.
