Santuario de San Pedro Claver

Santuario de San Pedro Claver is located in the old city of Cartagena de Indias and is the most important of its churches dedicated to the saint, who brought relief to millions of slaves who were taken from Africa and arrived in the city. The main facade is neoclassical, with lateral marble and faience surfaces in typically colonial style. The interior is filled with colonial iconography, including sculptures of the Saint, and includes the priest's mausoleum. Outside the church is the Monument in Honor of San Pedro Claver, a jewel of American romanticism. The monument towers almost 31 feet tall, built in the 19th century to immortalize the memory of the important saint. Visiting the Santuario is a must on any trip to Cartagena, and it is a great place to absorb some of the history of this beautiful city.
