Obelisco

The Obelisco de Buenos Aires, is one of the most emblematic and recognizable landmarks in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It stands at the intersection of Avenida 9 de Julio and Corrientes, near the old heart of the city. The obelisk is 82 feet high and 14 feet wide, and has been a permanent feature of the Buenos Aires skyline since 1936. It is estimated to have been composed of 6 million pieces of porphyry and granite. The word “Obelisco”, opulently engraved in gold over the monument's entrance, represents the ancient Egyptian architectural innovation. It towers over the nearby Plaza de la República, and is a popular gathering and meeting spot. A huge Italian Piazza has also sprung up in the vicinity, offering a variety of food and entertainment options. It is also the site of military parades, political protests, and numerous other social and cultural events. The Obelisco's bright lighting makes it a sight to behold, day or night.
