St Helen's Oratory
📍 United Kingdom
St Helen's Oratory is a 12th-century chapel located on a tidal island off the south coast of Cornwall, United Kingdom. It has been a pilgrimage point for centuries. This charming little building is one of the few surviving stone Early Medieval churches in Cornwall. It is dedicated to St Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine. The building is made of local stone and is only five-and-a-half meters long by three-and-a-half meters wide. Its walls are up to one-and-a-half meters thick, allowing it to withstand the strong winds and winter weather of Cornwall. Inside, you can find a granite altar, some old benches and a font. The oratory has numerous legends associated with it, adding to its already beautiful atmosphere. Access is only possible at low tide, so it would be good to plan your visit accordingly. You can reach St Helen's Oratory by boat or on foot, depending on the tide.
