The Saltburn Cliff Tramway is a funicular railway located in Redcar and Cleveland, United Kingdom. It's the oldest remaining water-balanced tramway in the world. Operating since 1884, it descends the steepest gradients of any water-balanced tramway on a course of less than 80 meters.
The tram consists of two carriages that travel in tandem, each weighing around 10 tonnes, and can carry up to 50 passengers. The carriages are lowered and raised with the help of a water balance system and connected by a cable that runs over a pulley at the top of the cliff. The ride is an exciting experience with some spectacular views of the North Sea and the North Yorkshire Moors. It's an ideal place to take a leisurely stroll, especially during low tide. Visitors can also explore the historical Saltburn Valley Gardens at the top of the cliff, or enjoy a picnic on the green nearby.
