Loggerhead Lighthouse, located in North Carolina, United States, is one of many lighthouses built by the US Coast Guard in the 19th century to help protect mariners from the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse is set against the dunes of the Outer Banks and is still active, lighting up the night sky for 21 miles. The original light was made of a single Fresnel lens and burned kerosene, but in 1941 it was replaced with an automated beacon. Visitors to Loggerhead Lighthouse can explore the grounds, which also include a fog signal room and a watch tower, as well as take a guided tour of the lighthouse. The lighthouse is also a popular spot among bird watchers and wildlife photographers, as the diverse coastal habitats are home to many species, including herons, cormorants and osprey.
