Built in 1814, it was designed to defend Utrecht city, and was part of a defense line connecting strong points such as the fort of Amsterdam, Loevestein and the Donaustaufen tower. Its typical shape is emphasized by a ditch, an escarp and an artificial mound, making it an interesting example of 19th-century military architecture.
