Fort Jutphaas is a star-shaped fort located in the Dutch city of Nieuwegein, Utrecht province. Built in 1814, it was designed to defend Utrecht city, and was part of a defense line connecting strong points such as the fort of Amsterdam, Loevestein and the Donaustaufen tower. Its typical shape is emphasized by a ditch, an escarp and an artificial mound, making it an interesting example of 19th-century military architecture. Nowadays, the fort is listed as a national monument, and visitors may explore the complex, rooms and secret tunnels as well as its impressive expanse of ramparts and bastions. The place is also ideal for bird-watching and enjoying a scenic view of the surrounding landscape. There is a restaurant, a camping site and many cultural events throughout the year. Visit Fort Jutphaas to get acquainted with a nearly 200-year-old Dutch military stronghold!
