The Château de Chenonceau is an iconic French château located in the Loire Valley, in the commune of Chenonceaux. It was first built in the mid-15th century by Katherine Briçonnet, with the foundation being laid in the easiest place to cross the Cher river. It later belonged to various powerful figures, including King Henry II’s mistress, Diane de Poitiers and King Henry IV's widow, Catherine de Médicis. This stunning fortress is one of the best-preserved and most admired Renaissance châteaux in Europe, known as the ‘Ladies’ Château’. It boasts beautiful, expansive gardens and a grand fountain, making it a popular tourist destination today. Visitors can take a guided tour of the château, explore the bedrooms, chapel, library, and even the large kitchens. One of the best features of the castle is its small but spectacular bridge that crosses the Cher River. From the bridge, you can enjoy wonderful views of the gardens and fountains below. There is also a modern museum attached to the castle that houses art and artifacts from throughout the ages, as well as a beautiful restaurant for a relaxed lunch or dinner by the shores of the Cher.
