Salar de Uyuni, located in the southwest of Bolivia, is the world's largest salt flat at an elevation of 3,656 meters above sea level. It is one of the most spectacular terrains in the world and is visited year round by photographers and travelers alike. It was created by the transformation of prehistoric Lago Minchin, a giant salt lake that dried up about 40,000 years ago, leaving behind a desert-like landscape. Salar de Uyuni covers an area of about 10,000 km2 and is composed of several different types of surface materials, including salt water, salt crust, and a distinctive type of pinky-white-colored salt called “punta blanca”. The salt flats are covered with a thin layer of water during the rainy season, which reflects the sky and creates an amazing mirrored effect. During the dry season, visitors can explore its surreal terrain, which is full of adventure. Visitors can view volcanoes, traditional salt-mining communities, colorful lagoons, stunning wild landscapes, and even flamingos!
