Ahvaz is the largest city and capital of Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran. Located on the bank of the Karun River, it has a population of over 1.5 million inhabitants, making it the sixth most populous city in Iran. Ahvaz is a major industrial city, and home to many important historical sites, such as the Ahvaz National Museum, the Nakheel Palace, and the Tomb of Kabud Mosque. Ahvaz also has a vibrant cultural life, and is a popular weekend destination for Iranians from other cities. Tourism attractions include the Si-o-Seh pol bridge, the ancient Gheshm Island and the many colorful masjids (mosques) in the city. Other activities in Ahvaz include shopping for carpets and spices, exploring the local bazaar, touring the city’s wineries, and hiking in the nearby Zagros Mountains. Ahvaz is also home to some of Iran’s best carpet-weaving workshops, and a great place to try traditional Iranian cuisine like Fesenjan (pomegranate stew) and gombi (stuffed zucchini).
