The Stele Pavilion stands on the central approach to Sun Yat-sen’s mausoleum on Nanjing’s Purple Mountain, below the long ceremonial stairway leading to the memorial hall. It forms part of the monumental complex honoring a central figure in the revolution that ended China’s imperial rule. Inside, a tall stone tablet carries an inscription in calligraphy by Tan Yankai, recording Sun’s burial here by the Chinese Nationalist Party. The pavilion’s blue-glazed, double-eaved roof and pale stone exterior establish the architectural palette repeated farther up the hillside. Viewed straight on, its broad central opening frames the stele, while the balanced façade reinforces the mausoleum’s strongly symmetrical layout. The contrast between the sheltered tablet and the expansive staircase beyond gives this intermediate monument its distinctive place in the ascent.
