Lake Chūzenji sits in the mountains above Nikkō, with Mount Nantai rising from its northern shore. Volcanic activity associated with the mountain formed the lake by blocking a valley, and water leaving its eastern end plunges over nearby Kegon Falls. From the shore, the broad sweep of water sets Nantai against forested slopes; on calm days, the mountain is reflected in the lake. In autumn, red and gold foliage brings a vivid edge to the blue water.
