📍 Japan
Chion-in’s Sanmon is the monumental entrance to the head temple of Jōdo-shū, the Pure Land Buddhist school founded by Hōnen, in Kyoto’s eastern Higashiyama district. Built in 1621 under the patronage of Tokugawa Hidetada, the second Tokugawa shogun, the two-storey wooden gate reflects the temple’s close ties to the ruling family. About 24 metres tall, it combines broad, deeply overhanging tiled roofs with massive timber columns and an upper gallery. The contrast between its strong horizontal rooflines and the steep stone staircase beyond makes the entrance especially distinctive: the gate spans the foreground while the steps draw the eye uphill toward the main temple precinct, backed by Higashiyama’s wooded slopes.
