📍 China
Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park lies west of Zhangye in Gansu, along the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains. Its best-known landscape, often called the Rainbow Mountains, consists of layered sedimentary rocks whose mineral colors form bands of red, ochre, yellow and pale cream. Uplift, tilting and erosion have exposed these strata across rounded hills, sharp ridges and deeply cut gullies, making the terrain’s geological structure unusually visible. Broad views show the colored bands continuing across successive slopes, while tighter compositions reveal fine stripes and dry, eroded textures. The surrounding sparsely vegetated landscape leaves the rock patterns largely unobscured. Designated paths and viewing platforms provide vantage points while keeping visitors off the fragile formations.
